How can I borrow a locker key?

You can borrow a key for a locker for one day with your student card / Med Uni Graz card or your photo ID after registration. If you do not return the key on the same day, a late fee of € 2 per day will be charged.

What can I take into the library?

Items you need to study (books, writing materials, laptops, water bottles) are allowed. Food (including sweets), jackets, bags and backpacks are not permitted.

I have lost/forgotten something in the library. How can I get it back?

If we have your details (e.g. if you have lost your student card), we will send you an e-mail when we have found the item. For other items, please send an e-mail to bibliothek(at)medunigraz.at, call +43 316 385 73050 or ask at the information desk.

Who can borrow items from the University Library?

Members of the Medical University of Graz, students of other Austrian universities and colleges, and any other person after registration.

How can I find out whether a book is available in the University Library? How can I find out whether it is borrowed?

When you search for a book in MEDsearch, the ‘Holdings’ section shows you which copies are available. If all copies are borrowed, you can register to reserve the title. The locations of pre-clinical textbooks, clinical textbooks, the learning center and reference books indicate that the book is in the University Library.

What does it mean to see a different location for preclinical textbooks, clinical textbooks, learning centers or reference books?

If the location of a title listed under ‘Holdings’ in MEDsearch is a different location, e.g. ‘Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery’ or ‘Radiology’, the copy is not in the University Library but in the relevant clinic. Click on ‘available on request’ below the location display to see the contact details.

How do I borrow a book? Where can I return it?

The University Library is open to the public. You can take books off the shelves and borrow them at the information desk. Books should also be returned to the information desk. If the library is closed, books can also be returned to the learning center during opening hours.

What items can I borrow?

Textbooks (60 days with the option to renew) and reference books (30 days with the option to renew). In addition, learning objects can be borrowed for one (bone case, learning objects) or three days (sonography devices, VR glasses).

Which items cannot be borrowed?

Media published before 1945, and blocked university publications cannot be borrowed.

How long is the loan period?

The loan period varies according to the medium or item:

  • Books from the textbook collection: 60 days (may be extended to a maximum of 180 days if no other user has requested them)
  • Reference books and university publications: 30 days (can be extended to a maximum of 180 days if not requested by another user)
  • Locker keys: 1 day
  • Bone case: 1 day
  • Learning objects: 1 day
  • Sonography equipment: 3 days
  • VR glasses: 3 days

How can I extend the loan period and how many times?

You can extend the loan period yourself via your MEDsearch account. To do so, click on ‘Login’ in the top right-hand corner of MEDsearch, then on ‘Your account’ and then extend the desired media under ‘Borrowed media’ by placing a check mark in front of the desired media and then clicking on ‘Extend selection’. Alternatively, you can also extend all your borrowed items by clicking on ‘Extend all’.

The loan period can only be extended up to 180 days for books in the textbook collection. After 180 days, the book must be returned. An extension is not possible if another user has already reserved the title or if the return is already due.

Books can also be renewed on site with a photo ID/student ID or by phone.

Can I extend the loan period if the return is overdue?

If the return date has passed, the book cannot be renewed.

I can't renew my books in MEDsearch. Why not?

Renewals are no longer possible if the item has already been renewed for a total of 180 days, a return is already due, or another user has reserved the title.

How many items can I borrow at one time?

You can borrow 15 items at a time.

Is there a charge for borrowing books?

Borrowing is free of charge. However, charges will apply if the loan period is exceeded.

What can I do if all copies of a book have been borrowed? How does a reservation work?

In this case, after registering in MEDsearch, you can put your name down for the title. You will receive an e-mail when the book is available again. It will then be held for you for ten days and you can collect it from the information desk.

Where do I get my ‘provided’ books?

The books provided can be collected from the information desk. They are held there for 10 days.

What happens if I return books, locker keys or learning objects late?

Late returns are subject to a fine. This is € 0.20 per book/day for books, € 2 per item/day for locker keys and learning objects, and € 10 per item/day for sonography equipment and VR headsets. You will not be able to borrow any new items until you have paid the due amount.

What happens if a book is damaged or lost?

In this case, the book trade price (less 10 % if available) is payable. Damage includes, but is not limited to, stains/soiling, stains, torn pages or loss of accompanying material.

How can I get a book that is not in the University Library's collection?

You can order and borrow a book that the University Library does not have in its collection via Document Delivery for a fee. Alternatively, you can make an acquisition request.

How can I return books when the University Library is closed?

Outside library opening hours books or locker keys can be returned to the learning center during its opening hours.

What is the book bazaar?

At the book bazaar, you can buy copies of books that have been removed from the University Library, at a reduced price. Please note that you must pay in cash; payment by debit card is not possible. The bazaar is located opposite the information desk and is stocked continuously.

How are the books in the University Library arranged?

The books in the University Library are divided into preclinical textbooks, clinical textbooks and reference books. The books are arranged according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classification. You can search by subject area on the MEDsearch homepage under ‘Search in: NLM Classification’.

Where can I find the University Library's licensed databases?

Our licensed databases are linked in the Digital Library.

Where can I find e-books?

You can find our e-books directly in MEDsearch. You can select ‘Electronic book’ under ‘Type of publication’.

Where can I find journal articles?

The best way to search for journal articles is to use our databases. You can access them via the Digital Library.

Where can I find journals?

Journals can be found in EZB or MEDsearch and articles in Pubmed or one of our other databases.

I am not a member of the Medical University of Graz. Can I still access the University Library's electronic resources?

As a registered user, you can access electronic resources using the PCs in the University Library or by connecting to our WiFi. Use outside the library is only possible for members of the Medical University of Graz.

I cannot access a particular database. What should I do?

Clear your browser cache or try to access the Digital Library directly from our homepage. If you still do not have access, please send us an e-mail at ​​​​​​​ elektronischebibliothek(at)medunigraz.at or call us at +43 316 385 73050.

I cannot open a particular e-book. What should I do?

Do I need a special reader to read e-books and other electronic resources?

No, e-books and full texts are available in either PDF or HTML format.

How can I access the University Library's electronic resources from home or on the move?

To access our licensed databases or licensed full texts from home or when travelling, log in via the Digital Library and register with your MEDonline details. Click on the LinkSolver-Button for the article you want. If the article is not licensed, you can also use this button to place an order with the Literature Service.

If you wish to access our e-book service, search for the e-book in MEDsearch and log in with your MEDonline details. Please note that access from outside the campus is only possible for members of the Medical University of Graz - i.e. staff, students and lecturers.

How can I access articles that are not licensed by the Medical University of Graz?

Non-licensed articles can be ordered for a fee via our Literature Service.

Am I allowed to forward full texts to third parties (“scholarly sharing”)?

Whether or not full texts or other content may be made available to third parties through scholarly sharing depends on the individual terms and conditions of each publisher. If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to elektronischebibliothek@medunigraz.at.

How do I create a PDF/A file to submit my thesis?

In MS Word, under ‘Save as’, select ‘PDF’ as the file type, then click on ‘Options’. You can tick the box next to ‘ISO 19005-1 compatible (PDF/A)’. If this does not work, please send an e-mail to bibliothek(at)medunigraz.at.
